“I don’t tend to think about freedom as a segmented thing. It’s all or nothing. You’re free or you’re not. As soon as you recognize a boundary, it’s going to affect your behavior. Either you’re going to respect it or you’re going to fight it, and either way, you’re not doing what you set out to do.”
— John Dunivant, 2011 Kresge Artist Fellow and creator of Theatre Bizarre

In this podcast, Metro Times Arts & Culture Editor Travis Wright hosts the Craig Fahle Show featuring John Dunivant, Ken Poirier and Gary Bredow of Theatre Bizarre.
Known as a circus-themed underground masquerade party, Theatre Bizarre is going mainstream — at least as conventional as an event like Theatre Bizarre can go.

This year’s class is as diverse as the first: a compelling group of designers, sculptors, photographers, painters and installation artists, all of which could describe John Dunivant, the artistic brain behind Detroit’s legendary Theatre Bizarre, who is perhaps one of this year’s better-known fellows…
John Dunivant, Theatre Bizarre’s creator, has just been chosen as a 2011 Kresge Arts Fellow. From The Kresge Foundation:
The Kresge Artist Fellowships are given to artists whose commitment to innovation and artistic achievement are evident in the quality of their work. The fellowships recognize creative vision and commitment to excellence within a wide range of artistic disciplines, including artists who have been classically and academically trained, self taught artists and artists whose art forms have been passed down through cultural and traditional heritage.
Congratulations to John and many thanks to the Kresge Foundation.
